On solid-axle 4x4 rigs, the front outer axle shaft universal joints are subjected to extreme multi-axis stress. They must continuously channel engine torque straight to the wheel hubs while pivoting up to 45 degrees during tight steering maneuvers on the trail or highway. Over time, or from running larger oversized off-road tires, factory universal joints wear down as internal grease paths dry up. A failing front axle U-joint will present itself through a loud metallic clicking or popping noise during tight turns, severe steering wheel binding when the 4WD system is engaged, or visible rust weeping past the bearing cap seals.
