On solid-axle Jeep configurations, the inner axle seals are pressed deep inside the axle housing tubes right where they meet the differential carrier. Over decades of trail use, thermal cycling, or rough axle shaft installations during a U-joint swap, the delicate rubber sealing lips can slice, tear, or harden. A failing inner seal typically announces itself when gear oil begins weeping or dripping out from the ends of the front axle tubes near the steering knuckles. If ignored, the differential fluid level will drop, causing catastrophic friction wear on your expensive ring and pinion gears.
